Most people that decide to start a Home Based Business will have given it a lot of thought over a long period of time; however there are some that simply jump in, feet first simply based upon an advertisement or recommendation. If you haven't given it any thought in the past, the chances of waking up one morning and deciding to start a business will only lead to a predicable catastrophic failure. Odds are that you will spend yourself out of business before you ever open for business!

One of the smartest things you can do for yourself before you start your business is to write a business plan. Many people who want to start a home business ask if they really NEED a business plan, to which I ask if they really NEED to start a home business.

Writing a business plan for your Home Based Business is considered essential for many reasons, the most obvious of which is money! In the beginning stages, your business plan can also be incorporated with your business goals.

A good plan will help you gain focus and think through each aspect of your business. It will help you remain focused when you get discouraged or feel overwhelmed; and believe me you will! Your plan will help you figure out how to deal with possible problems before they happen and for those sneaky problems that just pop out of thin air.

Your business plan does not have to be lengthy, but must provide you a clear vision of your business, your goals (both short and long term), your intentions, and especially financial information.

Clearly your business plans may differ for different types of businesses. For this reason you must decide on what type of business you want to start. What will be your purpose? What exactly to you hope to create?

So you actually have three things to consider before you can get started in any business. The first two are fairly simple, they are based on your imagination, your goals and your skill set. The last one however can be a reality check!

So the first one is: What do you want to be when you grow up? What do you want to achieve? What do you know how to do? What is your motivation? Is it fame, fortune or freedom or maybe all of them? Then ask yourself, am I dreaming or do I really think I can learn how to do this?

The second one is: What type of business model is best for me? Is it Network Marketing, is it Affiliate Marketing or perhaps its providing a service to others.
The third one is as I mentioned a reality check! And that is: How much money can you put at risk to start a new business!

Now pay attention! If you opened a shoe store to sell all types of shoes; and you had no staff, no cash register, no shelving, no advertising and the only pair of shoes you had to sell where on your feet; how successful do you think you would be?

So if you're of the mindset that you want to start your own business without any investment, I'm here to tell you that it's just not possible!

I know; what about all those web pages that scream No Experience Needed, No Investment Needed Make a ton of Money! What you're not seeing is the unwritten disclaimer that a fool and their money are soon parted!

My friends; without a business plan, it should be obvious that you plan to fail!
