What is Child Protection Week?

THE aim of National Child Protection Week is to promote the value of children, to focus attention on the issue of child abuse and neglect, and to encourage local groups to participate in prevention activities.

Child Protection Week was the brainchild of the Management Committee of Protect All Children Today Incorporated (PACT). The committee organised a coalition of agencies involved in child protection to stage the first annual Child Protection Week in Brisbane in 1986.

As a result of the success of the week in Queensland, the National Association for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (NAPCAN Australia) assumed responsibility for organising Child Protection Week activities in the remaining States.

Child Protection Week is now a national event held during the first full week of September and co-ordinated nationally by NAPCAN.

In Queensland it continues to be run by the State-based Child Protection Week Committee in close association with NAPCAN.

Theme

Each year the Queensland Child Protection Week Committee, in consultation with NAPCAN, selects a theme to highlight a specific area within child protection. The theme for 2008 is: Children See, Children Do: Make Your Influence Positive.
